Ordained Ministry

Cardinal Jorge Medina Estévez (1926–2021) was a Chilean prelate, theologian, and respected leader in the Catholic Church whose service spanned nearly seven decades. After his ordination to the priesthood in 1954, he served as a professor, theological adviser at the Second Vatican Council, bishop of Rancagua and Valparaíso, and later as Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. Pope St. John Paul II created him a cardinal in 1998.

Widely recognized for his contributions to the Church's liturgical life, Cardinal Medina played a pivotal role in overseeing the renewal and translation of the Roman liturgical books. As Cardinal Protodeacon, he announced the election of Pope Benedict XVI to the world following the 2005 papal conclave.

Cardinal Medina is the author of the Sacrament Series of booklets, published by Ascension in partnership with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). These pastoral guides help Catholics better understand the meaning, celebration, and grace of the Church's sacraments.
