The Papal Conclave

In 2025, the world turns its eyes once again to the Sistine Chapel, where cardinal electors from around the globe will convene to seek divine guidance in choosing the 267th pope.

When does the Conclave begin?

The conclave is set to begin May 7, 2025.

Who chooses the next Pope?

The pope is elected by the College of Cardinals—specifically, those under the age of 80. These are called cardinal electors.

Who can be elected Pope?

Technically, any baptized male Catholic can be elected. But in practice, the new pope is almost always chosen from among the cardinals.

How does voting work?

Each cardinal writes a name on a ballot, folds it, and places it in a chalice. A 2/3 majority is required to elect a pope. There are up to 4 rounds of voting each day.

How long does the papal election take?

It varies! Some conclaves are finished in a day, others take several days. Most recent elections wrap up in just a few days.
