Ten Ways to Become a Better Listener
- Be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger. (James 1:19)
- Look into their eyes. Don’t be distracted. Don’t look around or beyond them.
- Love them by listening to their heart.
- Ask the Lord to help you listen to where they are coming from.
- Recognize that your response may not come all at once, but in stages.
- Avoid being offended by what they say, don’t take it personally.
- Be willing to change if they have a good point.
- Don’t formulate thoughts when the other person is speaking. Just listen.
- Remember their name and use it often.
- You don’t need to cover every point.
Other Tips
- Ask follow up questions and repeat back to them what they said in your own words.
- Your body language is important. (e.g. Your eyes and mouth can give away that you are ready to interrupt.)
- Avoid any “why” questions, instead, look for information with “what” questions.
