Mary’s Queenship: The Crown of Discipleship

If we want Christ’s kingdom to truly reign in our hearts, let us learn from Mary. As we honor Mary during the month of May, Dr. Sri highlights how Mary’s queenship exemplifies three key biblical aspects of discipleship- she listened to God's voice, she gave up everything, and she persevered through sufferings. If we do these three things we too can reign with Christ.

During the month of May, we celebrate the Blessed Virgin Mother who is the queen of heaven and earth. We honor her with many different songs and prayers because she reminds us about the incredible work Christ can do within each of us if we allow him to reign as the king of our hearts. Mary allowed Christ’s kingdom to extend into her entire life and Christ also desires to reign in our hearts so he can free us from our sins, our weaknesses, and our flaws. He has the power to free us from our evil, the devil, and death itself. He longs to offer us the peace and joy of his kingdom. Most extraordinarily, he has promised all his faithful disciples a share in his reign. So how do we allow him to be victorious in our own hearts? Here are three key biblical aspects of discipleship that Mary exemplifies for us:

1. Listening to God’s voice

Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. He who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I myself conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.

-Revelations 3:20-21

2. Giving up everything

Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of man shall sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And every one who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. But many that are first will be last, and the last first.

- Matthew 19: 28-30

3. Persevering in Suffering

if we endure, we shall also reign with him;

if we deny him, he also will deny us;

- 2 Timothy 2:12

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.

- 2 Timothy 4:7-8
