About St. Bernadette Soubirous
Bernadette was born on January 7, 1844 and grew up in a loving family. She struggled with her health and learning how to read and write.
In February 1858, Mary appeared to Bernadette for the first time in a cave just outside of Lourdes. After the initial apparition, Mary appeared to Bernadette seventeen more times. The instructions Bernadette received were to have a chapel built on the spot and that people should wash in and drink the water from the spring Bernadette had dug up.
The apparitions went under intense investigation and for many years, Bernadette was questioned and harassed. Eventually, she entered the Sisters of Notre Dame of Nevers.
Bernadette died on April 16, 1879. She was canonized in 1933.
Mark 2:3-5
And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and when they had made an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “My son, your sins are forgiven.”
Luke 4:16-21
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; and he went to the synagogue, as his custom was, on the sabbath day. And he stood up to read, and there was given to him the book of the prophet Isaiah. He opened the book and found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” And he closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant, and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
