Review from Previous Episode - Anger: Is It Good or Bad?

What is anger? Anger equals a desire to punish. However, this desire is not a desire for rage or revenge. It is a desire to set things right. Anger might be remedial or for the protection of others. There is “good anger” which is when we are angry about the right things in the right way. However, there is also “unreasonable patience” which is when we are not angry when we should be.

Sinful Anger

Anger can be sinful when we are angry about the wrong things or we are angry in the wrong ways. An example of being angry about the wrong thing could be anger of someone else getting a promotion or maybe getting angry about a child spilling their sippy cup. Responding in the wrong way could look like rage or a certain tone of voice or certain thoughts.

Roots of Anger
  1. Pride
  2. Desire to control
  3. Wounds from past
5 Practical Tips if You Struggle with Anger (from St. Francis De Sales)
  1. It is better to live without anger than try to moderate it.
  2. Do not dialogue with your anger.
  3. Pray: Call out to God for help. Try to say prayer calmly and peacefully.
  4. If you fall into sinful anger, try to correct fault right away. “Fresh wounds are quickest healed.”
  5. Live virtue at home and not just in public.
Parenting

First, parents should punish children when they are not behaving - out of LOVE! True love means that we desire what is best for the person we love. What is best is virtue because it leads to true happiness. Sometimes as parents we can struggle to discipline because we want to be liked. It can also take a lot of effort! Perhaps, we are trying to talk with friends or cook dinner or take care of another child, but we cannot ignore our children’s bad behavior. Love calls us to respond and to teach our children.
