"What we have in the Catholic Church is a line of custody, all the way from Peter to the present-day Pope."

Shownotes

Isaiah 22:20-25

In that day I will call my servant Eli′akim the son of Hilki′ah, 21 and I will clothe him with your robe, and will bind your girdle on him, and will commit your authority to his hand; and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. 22 And I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David; he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open. 23 And I will fasten him like a peg in a sure place, and he will become a throne of honor to his father’s house. 24 And they will hang on him the whole weight of his father’s house, the offspring and issue, every small vessel, from the cups to all the flagons. 25 In that day, says the Lord of hosts, the peg that was fastened in a sure place will give way; and it will be cut down and fall, and the burden that was upon it will be cut off, for the Lord has spoken.”

Matthew 18:16-20

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesare′a Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do men say that the Son of man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Eli′jah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter,[b] and on this rock[c] I will build my church, and the powers of death[d] shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

Jeff, I respect your show and enjoy listening to Daily Reflections also. I have one question though and maybe through your background you can answer it. I want to understand why the Pope is considered head of the Catholic Church. I understand Jesus gave the keys to Peter as the leader of the Church. But isn’t the Church all Christians regardless of denomination. There were not denominations in the early church. I have to say I also was born and raised Catholic and then fell away. The Chosen brought me back to the Church and that was done by an Evangelical Christian. If a Christian recognizes the Pope as the true successor of Peter, why do they have to become Catholic? Jesus came for all of us. I have many non Catholic Christian friends and family, and one of the things that is the most difficult to understand, is why each religion or denomination believes they are the one true faith. There is one God who created all of us. I believe that maybe there are so many denominations so that everyone can be reached.
Pope Francis bridged the gap for a lot of people. Maybe the next Pope can take it further into accepting any denomination that accepts him as the leader of the Christian Church.
