Is Advent in the Bible? Scripture Verses for Advent
Is Advent Mentioned in the Bible?
While there are no direct mentions of Advent in the Bible, the themes and Scriptures associated with Advent are deeply rooted in biblical texts. Themes like preparation and anticipation are often mentioned and alluded to throughout both the New and the Old Testament. Below are just a few examples of areas of Advent in the Bible.
Scripture Verses for Advent
It is easy to find Advent in the Bible. Following the main themes of Advent, there are many Scripture verses we can meditate on throughout the season. Whether we need to learn to wait patiently or repent and ask God for forgiveness, there is a verse for it!
Advent in the Bible: Prophecies of the Messiah
The Bible’s prophecies about the Messiah lay the foundation for Advent. Prophecies in Isaiah, Micah, and others foretell a Savior’s birth, his role as a light to the nations, and even his birthplace in Bethlehem. During Advent, we can reflect on these ancient promises, seeing their fulfillment in Jesus, whose arrival brings hope and salvation. These prophesies are just one way we see Advent in the Bible. As Catholics, we await both the remembrance of Christ's birth and his promised return.
- Isaiah 7:14: Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanu-el
- Isaiah 9:6: For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be upon his shoulder, and his name will be called 'Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace
- Jeremiah 23:5: Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land
Advent in the Bible: Preparation and Anticipation
Preparation to meet our Lord is perhaps the most common theme of the Advent season, and in this way we see Advent in the Bible any time Scripture mentions preparing to encounter God. Anywhere John the Baptist is mentioned, we can recognize the themes of preparing the way for Jesus and repentance of sins.
- Matthew 3:3: For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, 'The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight'
- Luke 3:2-3: ...the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness; and he went into all the region about the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins
- Amos 4:12: Prepare to meet your God, O Israel!
Advent in the Bible: Hope and Waiting
Hope and waiting are central themes in the Scripture and another way we see Advent in the Bible. Throughout Scripture, God’s people waited for a promised Savior, holding onto hope through prophecies and promises. The season encourages believers to wait in hope, trusting in God’s timing and promises.
- Luke 2:29-32: ...he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, 'Lord, now let your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel
- Romans 8:25: But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience
- 1 Peter 1:13: Therefore gird up your minds, be sober, set your hope fully upon the grace that is coming to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ
