The book of Psalms offers Catholics an example of Old Testament prayer that gives eternal voice to the depth and richness of human experiences. With Psalms of hope and despair, joy and sorrow, faith and doubt, these beautiful passages of divine Revelation were prayed by Jesus, quoted by the New Testament writers, and used in the Church’s public prayer from the time of Jesus to the present day.

A translation of all 150 Psalms in addition to select Canticles from the Old and New Testaments, The Abbey Psalms and Canticles is the fruit of more than twenty years of collaboration between the monks of Conception Abbey in Missouri, the USCCB, and the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. It presents some of the most moving passages of Sacred Scripture in an accurate and poetic translation for use by liturgy directors, composers, parish music directors, and the clergy, religious, and lay faithful in scriptural study, devotion, and prayer. This translation will also be used in future editions of English language liturgical texts, such as the Liturgy of the Hours and the Lectionary.
