Ordained Ministry

Fr. Mark-Mary Ames is the Director of Communications and the Director of Priestly Studies of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal (CFR). The primary mission of the CFR community is a wholehearted embracing of Jesus Christ and their Holy Father, St. Francis of Assisi. Through their commitment to prayer and contemplation, the study of Sacred Scripture, fidelity to the Church and the sacraments, their fraternal life, and their generous service to others especially the poor, the CFRs receive the nourishment necessary to live out their lives as sons of St. Francis in the Capuchin tradition.

Fr. Mark-Mary is the host of the Ascension Presents video series The CFRs and the host of the 2025 podcast The Rosary in a Year (with Fr. Mark-Mary Ames, CFR). He was also the executive producer of the Poco a Poco music album featuring Br. Isaiah, CFR, and is the author of several books including Habits for Holiness: Small Steps for Making Big Spiritual Progress and Eight Promises of God: Discovering Hope Through the Beatitudes.

His favorite work, however, is not nearly as public. Near and dear to Fr. Mark-Mary’s heart is his work walking one-on-one with the suffering, hearing confessions, and offering service as a regular chaplain to the Sisters of Life formation convents.

So Very Helpful and Realistic

Have just started reading the book and it has already touched me in such a way, that it makes me excited about the possibility of finally getting to take serious but practical and realistic steps to grow in holiness!
As I am reading it, I keep telling myself "Yes, Yes", this is exactly what I have been struggling with and the things I know I need to work on but don't know exactly how to go about and make a change!
Thank You!!!!

Practical Guidance

This book is full of practical steps to help adult faith formation and practice of the faith. Fr. Mark Mary has multiple stories and prescriptions for practice that I found to be enlightening and profound. The fact that I am a Priest, Prophet, and King through baptism and incorporated into the Body of Christ has resonated with me due to Fr. Mark Mary's book. I am truly grateful and have purchased multiple copies for friends and family.

Habits for Holiness: Small Steps

From the introduction I was already hooked. It's truly an individual journey with the Holy Trinity. I gave my copies to the outstanding priests at my parish St Helen's Roman Catholic Church here at Glendale AZ. I am looking into getting more of this particular book not only for myself but my family and friends no matter their religious affiliations or lack thereof. Thank you sooooo very much for sharing this gem to the rest of this ❤world 🌎❤💙💕♥💖🌎

Life changing

This book is life changing for me. Fr. Mark has written an easy to understand and practical guide for prayer. He writes with great humility and gives easy to follow suggestions. Fr. Mark takes the abstract ideas and gives them concrete examples and questions for reflection. Habits for Holiness has helped me on my prayer journey to have a more intimate relationship with Jesus. Thank you Fr. Mark.

Ordering more copies

I had pre-ordered this book on That Other Site that begins with an "A"...and after waiting for months, the order was inexplicably cancelled. I debated a bit before re-ordering directly through the publisher and am so glad I did. I am only partially through my reading of it- and my excitement is increasing as I formulate plans to implement some of the suggestions presented by Fr. Mark-Mary Ames. He presents them in a way that you can see how they can be adapted and adopted, regardless of your current state of life. That isn't to say you won't be challenged- but how else can we grow? I will be ordering more copies of this book- for one son who is about to graduate college, and for another one about to become confirmed. Lots of good material written in an easy to understand way that won't overwhelm.

Practical, poco a poco

I love that the suggestions Fr. Mark-Mary provides are so practical.
His tone exudes humility, and the poco a poco (little-by-little) approach seems to be way more effective than just dumping a million suggestions on how to improve one's spiritual life. Typically when I do spiritual reading, I am tempted to implement every little thing at once, but Fr. Mark-Mary encourages a more realistic approach in the introduction of the book. May God bless Fr. Mark-Mary and the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal.

A practical and profound guide

I love the Franciscan spirituality. It’s simplicity and its depth. This book embodies those principals. Using plain language and practical examples Father Mark-Mary breaks down how to build a great spiritual life in today’s chaos. A must read for any Catholic wanting to deepen their spiritual life and grow in holiness!

Changing my life

This book is changing my life. It is full of Franciscan wisdom and profound insights, written in ordinary language, with a lay audience in mind. Most helpful for me was that Father Mark-Mary, at the very beginning of the book, suggests “note-taking:” putting a star by passages that touch your heart, going back to circle those things you intend to put into practice right now, and later re-reading and repeating this procedure. Habits for Holiness begins with a powerful chapter on how to integrate prayer in the moments of each day. Subsequent topics include: family; Catholic culture and liturgical living; simplicity; love for the poor; priests by baptism; living a provocative life (prophets); cultivating happiness, healthiness, and holiness; renewal that lasts (the mechanics of conversion); and an examination of conscience for lay people trying to live a life of radical discipleship. The book is full of realistic, compassionate, common-sense advice. My only recommendation is that Father Mark-Mary would write a parallel book for tweens and teens (9-16) that I could use with students. Pray for me too. I'm going to need a lot of grace to put some of these good inspirations into action. But- as Father says, "If nothing changes, nothing changes.)

Wowsers...now this is a book and a manuel too!

I have been so pleased with the book "Habits for Holiness" that not reviewing it would be doing all future readers a disservice. This book is laid out succinctly, and the steps or "habits" are presented in both a big picture way, as well as suggestions of baby steps needed to achieve the big picture. The "Habits" are doable, realistic and indeed lead to Holiness....reading the book is the first action, putting the habits to work is left up to you the reader I hope that indeed I can become holier - as I am made in the image and likeness of God - and my life should reflect this reality. I highly recommend.
