The homily is far more than a simple sermon or inspirational talk—it is a sacred moment in the liturgy where God desires to speak directly to our hearts. Dr. Sri explains how the homily prepares us for a deeper encounter with Jesus in the Eucharist.

Practical Ways to Get More Out of the Homily
1. Be Attentive
Don’t “check out” mentally during the homily. Common distractions include:
- Fatigue
- Anxiety or stress
- Thinking about work or weekend plans
- Judging the speaker too quickly
Instead, intentionally offer God your attention and openness.
2. Pay Attention to the Movements of Your Heart
Notice emotional or spiritual reactions during the homily. Ask yourself during the homily these questions:
- What inspired me?
- What challenged me?
- What made me uncomfortable?
- What stirred my heart?
These moments can reveal areas where God is inviting healing, growth, repentance, or encouragement.
3. Approach the Homily with Humility
Not every homily will be: dynamic, intellectually deep, emotionally engaging,or perfectly organized. Try not to approach the Mass with a critical or prideful spirit. Even if a homily feels imperfect, God can still work through:a Scripture verse,a simple insight,a brief example, or even one small phrase. The goal is not to evaluate the preacher as a public speaker, but to remain spiritually receptive to God.
Learning from St. Mother Teresa
Mother Teresa approached every Mass like a spiritual beggar—hungry for even the smallest morsel of God’s Word.Rather than demanding an extraordinary experience, she approached the liturgy with:humility, expectancy, reverence, and gratitude. Let us adopt this same disposition when listening to the homily.
