Why Do I Feel Sadness When Others Succeed?
Ascension TeamWhy do we feel sadness when others succeed? Sr. Josephine Garrett joins Fr. Josh Johnson to discuss the sin of envy as he begins his season on the seven deadly sins. Together, they answer a question about why it's so hard to desire the success of others and explain how patience and humility help us overcome envious thoughts.
Snippet of the Show
"Our feelings are information that must be submitted up to our intellect and to our reason to be properly ordered."
Shownotes
Struggling with Envy (8:27)
I'm trying to overcome the sin of envy and comparing myself to others by praying for those I compare against. But somewhere inside I know that the prayer is not genuine and I don't actually want their success despite my prayers. But at the same time, I do know I don't want to be like this. How do I shut the voice inside? (Anonymous)
The Litany of Humility
That, in the opinion of the world,
others may increase and I may decrease ...
That others may be chosen and I set aside ...
That others may be praised and I unnoticed ...
That others may be preferred to me in everything...
That others may become holier than I, provided that I may become as holy as I should…
