Jesus offers multiple invitations to this journey of healing. He will never force us to bring our woundedness to him. But he does invite us closer to him through the distressing circumstances that come up in our lives. These are actually great mercies, a pressing in of his presence, a time when we acutely feel the full force of the pain. We are free to turn away, to say no. But because he loves us, he will return again at a later time, with a tender touch, inviting us to explore that dark, uncharted area within.

As for our marriage, the journey continues even now and into the future. New wounds from our past and new ways to grow and love each other are regularly discovered, presented, accepted, and worked through together. What we thought we’ve already dealt with in our marriage sometimes resurfaces, revealing a totally new facet. It’s become almost rhythmic, this new uncovering of ever-deeper layers in our souls that Jesus wants to work on. But having so many of these trials behind us already, we are fortified and united together, knowing that Our Lord uses these new challenges only for our good. And that makes them easier to embrace.

So, if things do start to come to the surface in your marriage and you notice yourself reacting in ways you wish you didn’t, do not press the panic button. As St. John Paul II has said, the same God who called you to marriage continues to call you in the midst of the trials and difficulties that come up in your daily married life. Beth: That same God was calling me to go through this difficult, demanding, painful, but truly life-giving processing of healing. Edward: And that same God was calling me to remain steadfast in love, to accompany my wife through the process and do all I could to support her. And that same God may call you to a deeper level of healing—a healing that won’t be easy but will make you and your marriage new.

It All Comes to the Surface

In marriage, everything comes to the surface: the good and the bad. It is impossible to hide your true self including your weaknesses and sins. Other things that may come to the surface are our hurts from the past, our wounds. We are then faced with a decision: do we acknowledge those things and strive to heal and grow or do we ignore them?

God Loves Us

What is so important to remember is why God allows our “scum” to come to the surface. God allows this because he loves us. He loves us so much that he does not allow us to live with our “scum.” He loves us so much that he wants us to heal, grow, and change.
