OCIA, Conversion, and What You Can Do

OCIA, Conversion, and What You Can Do

Are we having a Catholic revival? In this kickoff episode of the new season, Gomer and Dave return to unpack one of the most important, and often misunderstood, processes in the Catholic Church, OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults). They explore why OCIA matters not just for those entering the Church, but for every Catholic, and how it reveals the deeper mission of evangelization in today’s world.

Shownotes

Main Themes

1. OCIA Is a Journey of Real Conversion

  • OCIA is not just a class, it's the Church’s process of conversion into Christ and His Church.

  • It's about transformation, not information.

  • The goal is full communion with Jesus through gradual spiritual growth.

2. Evangelization Is the Starting Point

  • Many entering OCIA today have never truly been evangelized.

  • OCIA often begins with first proclamation of the Gospel, not just teaching.

  • Conversion moves from encounter → faith → discipleship.

3. People Enter OCIA from Different Places

The Church recognizes different starting points:

  • Unbaptized with no faith formation

  • Baptized but not catechized

  • Baptized and formed in another Christian tradition

Key Insight: OCIA must be adapted to the person’s spiritual situation.

4. OCIA Is a Structured Spiritual Process

  • Pre-Catechumenate → evangelization

  • Catechumenate → formation

  • Purification & Enlightenment → deep preparation

  • Mystagogy → living the faith after initiation

Each stage is meant to deepen relationship with Christ.

5. Community Is Essential

  • Conversion happens in relationship and belonging, not isolation.

  • The Church is something you enter and live, not just learn about.

  • Community helps sustain long-term discipleship.

6. A Quiet Renewal Is Happening

  • There's been an increase of OCIA numbers and young adult interest!

  • Digital media (podcasts, YouTube, Bible studies) is driving many conversions.

  • People are seeking meaning beyond a shallow or exhausting culture.

7. Every Catholic Has a Role

  • Even if not involved in OCIA, Catholics are called to:

    • Pray for those entering the Church

    • Support and welcome them

    • Reflect on their own conversion
