Previous Crises in the Church & the Good that Resulted
-
Judaizers
In early Christianity, there were Jewish converts who maintained that salvation could be sought through works found in the Mosaic Law. This confusion resulted in St. Paul’s incredible teaching on grace as well as the Council of Jerusalem. -
Early Gnostics
Gnostics denied the goodness of creation and the meaning of Christ’s crucifixion. This heresy resulted in the work of great Church Fathers such as Origen and Irenaeus. -
Arianism
This heresy denied the mystery of the Trinity and the Son’s eternal divinity. St. Athanasius was one of the leading voices to oppose Arianism. In order to respond to this heresy, the Creed was established. -
Corrupting Affluence of Medieval Cities
Figures like St. Francis and St. Dominic rose up in response to this challenge within the Church. -
Politics, Worldliness, Sexual Sin of Bishops/Popes in Renaissance
During these challenging times, the Council of Trent took place. New orders were also established such as the Jesuits and Oratorians. There were also incredible saints raised up such as St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, and St. Pius X. -
Current Crisis of Marriage and Human Sexuality
Part of the current crisis is our world’s understanding of marriage and human sexuality. In response to this, we have gained a deeper understanding of human anthropology, human love, and Theology of the Body.
