Boys to Men: Choosing a Husband

Boys to Men: Choosing a Husband

Choosing your spouse is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make. Drawing from Psalm 1 and Psalm 112, Jeff outlines the character traits of a faithful, steadfast husband—one rooted in Scripture, generous in heart, and strong in adversity.

What to Look for in a Godly Man (Psalm 112)

1. He Fears the Lord (Psalm 112:1)

  • Not fear as terror — but reverent awe and submission to God.
  • His decisions, priorities, and leadership are under God’s authority.
  • He delights in God’s commands.
A man who meditates on God’s Word will act according to God’s Word.

2. He Is Rooted in Scripture (Psalm 1:1–2)

  • Does not walk in the counsel of the wicked.
  • Delights in the law of the Lord.
  • Meditates on Scripture day and night.
  • Equipped to handle real-life challenges biblically.

3. He Is a Family Man (Psalm 112:2)

  • Desires legacy, not just lifestyle.
  • Open to life and committed to building a godly household.
  • Works hard to provide shelter, protection, prayer, and leadership.
Looks and humor won’t sustain a marriage — character will.

4. He Is Spiritually Wealthy (Psalm 112:3)

  • Wealth here means wisdom, virtue, sacramental life, prayer.
  • Rich in mercy, kindness, and righteousness.
  • Financial wealth is secondary; spiritual wealth is essential.

5. He Brings Light into Darkness (Psalm 112:4)

  • Marriage will have difficult seasons.
  • A godly man responds with faith, not blame or despair.
  • He prays and leads courageously during hardship.

6. He Is Generous and Just (Psalm 112:5)

  • Deals generously.
  • Conducts his affairs with justice.
  • Not manipulative, selfish, or dishonest.
  • Gives others what is rightfully due.

7. He Is Steadfast and Courageous (Psalm 112:6–8)

  • Not swayed by public opinion or politics.
  • Firm heart, secure in God.
  • Faithful — not just belief, but lived trust.
  • Handles adversity with courage.
Faith is not merely intellectual agreement — it is personal trust and surrender.

8. He Has a Heart for the Poor (Psalm 112:9)

  • Generous toward those in need.
  • Lives out the Church’s preferential option for the poor.
  • Sees Christ in the vulnerable.

9. He Is Distinguished from the Wicked (Psalm 112:10)

  • The wicked respond with envy and anger.
  • The righteous endure with honor.
  • Choose character over charisma.

Practical Takeaway: “Be Picky”

Jeff shares his tradition of giving young people a guitar pick as a reminder:

Be picky about who you marry. Not picky about perfection — but intentional about godly character.
