Pay Attention to What's in Front of You

Pay Attention to What's in Front of You

It is easy to spend our lives distracted by everything except the mission God has given to us. Jeff challenges us to stop living under the “tyranny of the urgent” and instead focus on the people, responsibilities, and opportunities right in front of us.

Shownotes

1. Your Mission Begins at Home

Every Christian has a God-given mission:

  • in marriage
  • with children and grandchildren
  • at work
  • in the Church
  • within the broader community

The first and most important mission field is often the home.

2. Distraction Keeps Us from Faithfulness

Modern life constantly pulls our attention away:

  • endless scrolling
  • emails and texts
  • entertainment
  • anxiety about the future
  • comparison with others

Jeff emphasizes that discipleship requires intentional focus on the task God has already placed before us.

3. Jesus Focused on the Father’s Will

Referencing the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2602), Jeff notes:

What Jesus said and did publicly flowed from His private prayer with the Father.

Jesus modeled attentiveness to the Father’s mission rather than reacting to every distraction around Him.

4. “Arise, for It Is Your Task”

Using the story of Ezra and Nehemiah, Jeff highlights the rebuilding of Israel after exile as an example of faithful attention to one’s calling.

Ezra’s responsibility was clear:

  • teach God’s Word
  • restore worship
  • strengthen the people spiritually

Jeff challenges us to ask:

  • What is my task today?
  • What responsibilities has God specifically entrusted to me?

5. Bear Your Own Load

Paul’s teaching in Galatians becomes a central message:

  • take responsibility
  • fulfill your vocation
  • avoid neglecting what is within your control

Avoiding responsibilities only creates greater inner burden and anxiety later.

7. Stop Worrying About What You Cannot Control

Jeff contrasts productive responsibility with unhealthy worry. Instead, try to:

  • surrender uncontrollable situations to God
  • focus on faithful action today
  • trust God with tomorrow

8. Invest in Marriage and Family

Jeff reflects honestly on his years in ministry and the danger of becoming so busy serving others that family suffers. He references advice from Billy Graham:

“Less time in ministry, more time with my family.”

Parents are encouraged not to withdraw from difficult children but to lean in with love, leadership, and presence.

9. Keep Eternity in View

Prudence means making present decisions in light of eternal goals. Jeff recalls a woman who said:

“My goal is that one day I will dance with my entire family in heaven.”

Daily faithfulness should be guided by the ultimate goal of heaven.

10. Don’t Compare Your Calling to Others

The episode closes with Jesus’ words to Peter about John:

“What is that to you? Follow me.”

Jeff emphasizes that disciples are called to focus on their own faithfulness rather than constantly comparing themselves to others.
