What if the places in your life that feel stagnant, dry, or broken are exactly where the Holy Spirit wants to meet you? Jesus promised that rivers of living water would flow from the hearts of those who believe in Him — a promise fulfilled through the Holy Spirit. Dr. Sri explains how God’s living water flows into our deepest wounds to bring healing and transformation.
Shownotes
1. The Holy Spirit “descends”
Scripture repeatedly describes the Spirit coming downward:
- At Jesus’ baptism
- At the Transfiguration
- At the Annunciation
- At Pentecost
- In Old Testament signs like the cloud over Sinai
Unlike our instinct to “climb out” of spiritual dryness or pain through effort alone, the Christian life often begins by allowing God to enter the very places we avoid.
2. The “Dead Sea” image from Ezekiel 47
A central biblical image comes from Book of Ezekiel chapter 47:
- Water flows from the Temple
- It descends to the Dead Sea — the lowest point on earth
- The dead waters become living waters full of fish, trees, fruit, and healing
Dr. Sri connects this to the human soul:
- the stagnant relationship
- the hidden shame
- spiritual dryness
- fear, grief, uncertainty, sin
The point is that God’s Spirit moves toward those places, not away from them.
3. Jesus and “living water”
In Gospel of John chapter 7, Jesus says:
“Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.”
John explains He was speaking about the Holy Spirit. This to the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles, where priests carried water from the Pool of Siloam to the Temple each day, symbolizing hope for God’s future healing and salvation.
4. A practical spiritual insight
Sometimes the way upward is not to climb harder, but to allow the Spirit to descend deeper.
Instead of:
- endlessly self-improving,
- distracting ourselves,
- ignoring pain,
- or trying to “fix” everything alone,
the invitation is:
- to bring the wounded area honestly before God,
- and let the Holy Spirit enter it.
5. The role of the Holy Spirit
Sri emphasizes traditional titles of the Spirit:
- Comforter
- Counselor
- Advocate
- Intercessor
The Spirit brings:
- healing,
- courage,
- guidance,
- peace,
- trust,
- transformation.
