Letting Jesus Touch Your Wounds
Share
Is there a part of your life that you are afraid to share with God? Perhaps, there are things you would like to keep hidden from everyone. Dr. Edward Sri dives into the Gospel passage from last Sunday about Jesus and the leper. He explains how Jesus responds to the leper and what that reveals about how Jesus responds to each of our wounds.
Snippet from the Show
"If you wish, you can make me clean."
Mark 1:40-45
A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said,
“If you wish, you can make me clean.”
Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand,
touched him, and said to him,
“I do will it. Be made clean.”
The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean.
Then, warning him sternly, he dismissed him at once.
He said to him, “See that you tell no one anything,
but go, show yourself to the priest
and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed;
that will be proof for them.”
The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter.
He spread the report abroad
so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly.
He remained outside in deserted places,
and people kept coming to him from everywhere.
3 Ways Jesus Responds When the Leper Approaches
- “Moved with Pity”
Jesus sees everything. He saw the leper’s condition and was not disgusted. Instead, he responded with love and compassion. He delighted in this man’s heart. In the same way, Christ shows us love and compassion when we come to him in our brokenness.
- “Stretched Out His Hand”
Jesus did not pull back from the leper. He did not cover his face. Jesus reached out to the leper and touched him despite the social implications. So too does Jesus reach out to us. He never turns away from us.
- Touched the Leper
It was believed that touching a leper not only could spread the disease, but it would also make you unclean. However, Jesus still touched the leper. Jesus also touches those places in us that are dark and shameful to us. He can make us clean just as he made the leper clean.
