Avoiding the Comparison Trap (with Dr. Mario Sacasa)

Avoiding the Comparison Trap (with Dr. Mario Sacasa)

Ascension Team

In today's competitive society, it's easy to fall into the comparison trap. Dr. Mario Sacasa joins Fr. Josh to explore the sin of envy through the lens of evolutionary psychology and the teachings of St. Thérèse of Lisieux. Together, they answer a question about how to find peace with the reality that others may be "better" than us in certain areas. They also provide practical advice on embracing our unique place within the body of Christ.

Listener Question (8:00)

Hey Fr. Josh,

I understand that we are all created equal in the eyes of God. However, it's also clear that some people are naturally more gifted than others in areas like intelligence, athleticism, appearance, and success. Our society often feels like a constant competition, where we're always trying to prove our worth to others. Whether it's applying for jobs, dating, buying a house, or getting into college, it seems like everyone is a potential rival. In such a competitive and individualistic culture, it's hard not to become envious. How can I find peace with the reality that others may be "better" than me in certain ways and avoid resentment towards them? How can I heal from my insecurities that arise when comparing myself to others? (Sam)
