Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical letter Magnifica Humanitas (“Magnificent Humanity”) addresses the safeguarding of the human person in the era of artificial intelligence (AI). It was signed on May 15, 2026, and is scheduled for release on May 25, 2026.

As we anticipate its release, here are five things to know about encyclicals and how they help shape Catholic teaching for the whole Church.

1. What is a papal encyclical?

An encyclical is a formal teaching document in which the pope, as successor of St. Peter, offers teaching on matters of faith and morals in response to the questions of the present moment.

2. Who are encyclicals for?

Encyclicals are for all Christians, but especially Catholics. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Catholic faithful are called to receive the pope's ordinary teaching with "religious assent" (CCC 892).

3. Why did Pope Leo sign Magnifica Humanitas on May 15?

The May 15 signing date was intentional! May 15, 2026, is the 135th anniversary of Pope Leo XIII’s landmark social encyclical Rerum novarum, published on May 15, 1891.

4. What does "Magnifica Humanitas" mean?

It means "magnificent humanity." The title highlights the Church’s belief that every human person has God-given dignity, which must be safeguarded--especially in a time of rapid technological development.

5. What is the purpose of a papal encyclical?

The purpose of encyclicals is to connect timeless truth to today’s challenges. While rooted in Scripture and Tradition, encyclicals are written for the present moment. They help the Church apply the Gospel to new and urgent issues--offering moral clarity, spiritual guidance, and practical direction for how Catholics should live in the world today.

As we await Pope Leo’s first encyclical, these documents remain a steady guide for the faithful, helping us interpret the challenges of each new era in the light of the Gospel and the unchanging love of Christ.
