Description

The first complete Catholic Bible featuring the Grace typeface and design principles for readers with dyslexia or other reading difficulties.

The Catholic Reading Bible: Dyslexia-Friendly Edition is intentionally designed to offer a more accessible Scripture-reading experience for people with dyslexia, other reading difficulties, or anyone who prefers a clearer, more comfortable Bible-reading experience.

At the heart of this edition is the Grace typeface and its associated design system, developed specifically for accessible reading by internationally renowned Bible design firm 2K/DENMARK. Its development was informed by research, testing with dyslexic readers, and work with the University of Cambridge.

The Catholic Reading Bible: Dyslexia-Friendly Edition also includes nine colored reading overlays and one gray overlay as optional reading aids for those who find that an individually selected overlay makes text more comfortable to read.

Features include:

  • Grace typeface: Uses added weight near the base of letters to help visually anchor them to the line, along with distinctive details that make similar letterforms easier to differentiate.
  • Grace design principles: Each page incorporates shorter lines of no more than 35 characters, longer paragraphs divided into smaller text blocks, ragged-right alignment for more consistent word spacing, generous 11-point type, no footnotes or commentary, and other features designed to make sustained reading easier.
  • Trusted RSV-2CE translation: Features the complete text of the Revised Standard Version, Second Catholic Edition (RSV-2CE), the trusted Bible translation used in The Bible in a Year (with Fr. Mike Schmitz)™ podcast.
  • 10 included reading overlays: Includes nine colored overlays and one gray overlay, allowing readers to determine whether a particular tint makes reading more comfortable.
  • Built-in back pocket: Keeps the included overlays conveniently stored with the Bible.
  • 16 full-color maps: Provide helpful geographic context for biblical locations.
  • Durable Smyth-sewn binding: Features perimeter stitching and rounded corners for durability and regular use.
  • Three ribbon markers: Make it easy to keep your place in multiple sections of Scripture.
  • Beautiful two-piece keepsake box: Provides attractive storage and protection for the Bible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Grace typeface different from other fonts?

Exclusively designed by internationally-renowned Bible typesetter 2K/DENMARK in collaboration with Cambridge University’s Research Department, this font is uniquely designed to minimize the difficulties readers with dyslexia and other reading disabilities face. Compared to traditional fonts, this font features added weight at the base of each letter to anchor each word to the page and includes strategic lines and gaps within letterforms to help differentiate each letter. Each page is also optimally spaced, helping readers avoid the skipping of words and lines.

Why was the Grace typeface chosen instead of another dyslexia-specific font?

The Grace typeface was designed with accessible reading in mind. It adds weight to help anchor letters to the baseline and uses distinctive letterform details to make similar characters easier to tell apart, while remaining aesthetically pleasing for all readers.

Research is mixed on whether dyslexia-specific fonts by themselves consistently improve reading speed or accuracy for people with dyslexia.

Rather than relying on a single font, the Catholic Reading Bible: Dyslexia-Friendly Edition combines the Grace typeface with its associated design and layout principles, including carefully considered line length, paragraph structure, type size, spacing, and font styles.

The result is a design intended to support readers with dyslexia and other reading difficulties while remaining highly readable for everyone.

Is the Catholic Reading Bible: Dyslexia-Friendly Edition only for people with dyslexia?

No. The Catholic Reading Bible: Dyslexia Friendly Edition is not limited to those with dyslexia. Many readers may appreciate features such as clearer spacing, larger type, shorter line lengths, strong visual hierarchy, and a less crowded page. Even someone without dyslexia may find this Bible exceptionally easy to read.

What makes this Bible easier to read for people with dyslexia and other reading difficulties?

  • Typeface: The Grace typeface was specifically developed for accessible reading by 2K/DENMARK in collaboration with the University of Cambridge and inspired by the experience of publisher Sarah Grace, who has dyslexia. Its letterforms are designed to be highly distinguishable and easy to follow.
  • Line Length: Lines do not exceed 35 characters, helping readers track more easily from one line to the next. Words are not hyphenated at the ends of lines.
  • Paragraph Length: Paragraphs exceeding 11 lines are divided into smaller text blocks, helping readers maintain their place and reducing visual fatigue.
  • Type Size: The biblical text is set in a generous 11-point type size.
  • Text Alignment and Spacing: A ragged-right margin maintains consistent spacing between words rather than stretching text to create a fully justified right edge.
  • Font Styles: Bold, italic, and all-capital text are avoided in the biblical text to maintain consistent and predictable letterforms.
  • Reduced Visual Complexity: Footnotes and callouts are omitted so readers can focus on the biblical text without unnecessary visual distractions.
  • Colored and Gray Overlays: Ten plastic overlays are included as an optional reading aid. Research into visual stress has found that individually selected colored overlays may make reading more comfortable for some people who experience visual distortions or discomfort while reading.

How do I use the included colored and gray overlays?

Some people experience visual stress when reading, such as eyestrain, glare, or the appearance that text is moving or shimmering. Others may simply find stark black-on-white contrast uncomfortable. In these cases, a colored or gray overlay may make reading more comfortable.

Because color preferences vary from person to person, the Catholic Reading Bible: Dyslexia-Friendly Edition includes nine colored overlays and one gray overlay so readers can determine whether any are helpful for them. The colored overlays can be used individually or paired by placing one on top of another, providing 18 available color options. The gray overlay provides a neutral option for readers who find that reducing brightness and contrast makes text more comfortable to read without introducing a colored tint.

The overlays are stored in a pocket in the back of the Catholic Reading Bible: Dyslexia Friendly-Edition and are intended as an optional reading aid. They are not intended to treat dyslexia and will not benefit every reader.

What translation of Scripture is used in the Catholic Reading Bible: Dyslexia Friendly Edition?

The Catholic Reading Bible: Dyslexia Friendly Edition is written in the Revised Standard Version, Second Catholic Edition (RSV-2CE) translation of Scripture—the same translation used in The Great Adventure Catholic Bible and the award-winning Bible in a Year (with Fr. Mike Schmitz)™ podcast.

With Ascension’s exclusive collaboration with the internationally renowned Bible typesetter 2K/DENMARK, this is the only Catholic Bible in this translation that features the Grace typeface.

Was this Bible designed or tested with input from people with dyslexia?

The Catholic Reading Bible: Dyslexia-Friendly Edition uses the Grace typeface and its associated design and layout principles, which were developed specifically for accessible reading by 2K/DENMARK in collaboration with the University of Cambridge and inspired by the experience of publisher Sarah Grace, who has dyslexia.

The development of Grace included research and testing with readers with dyslexia. In an early test at St. Mary’s & St. John’s School in London, dyslexic students read text set in a beta version of the Grace typeface and provided feedback about its clarity, letterforms, and their ability to follow the text. The typeface and design were also further developed and academically tested with Cambridge.

These research-informed accessibility principles, such as distinctive letterforms, carefully considered spacing, shorter line and paragraph lengths, and others, have been incorporated throughout the Catholic Reading Bible: Dyslexia-Friendly Edition.

What ages can use the Catholic Reading Bible: Dyslexia-Friendly Edition?

The Catholic Reading Bible: Dyslexia-Friendly Edition is designed for older children, teens, and adults with dyslexia or other reading disabilities or difficulties, as well as anyone who prefers its accessible typography and page design. It contains the full text of the Revised Standard Version, Second Catholic Edition (RSV-2CE).
