I just recently purchased this book. The first chapter deals with the Sign of the Cross. I am a cradle Catholic and have taken that for granted. There was no real thought to it. It was just how we always started our prayers. Dr. Sri opened my mind and dropped a little wisdom with a great impact. I will never again begin the mass with just a mere sign of the cross without realizing that it is "a sign of divine protection and a mark distinguishing the faithful from the wicked" I did not really think about the spiritual mark I was making on my body. Dr. Sri gives example after example of signs used in scripture.
While making the sign we are calling on God's name. Just thinking about that just gave me goosebumps. It made me realize just what I was doing without thinking. I know that the mention of His name makes demons cower in fear. It is a very powerful thing to do. Dr. Sri reminds us of God's promise, when two or three gather in his name. I knew about that, but didn't really think about it anymore. This is a great reminder for older Catholics who may have forgotten about these treasures over the years. The first chapter is filled with these kind of reminders and nuggets of wisdom. He gives plenty of Bible references which I plan to look up and take my time. I'm really excited to read this book. In light of what I have read to date, I would highly recommend a biblical walk through the Mass by Dr. Edward Sri, to older and younger Catholics.
