Not all paintings of the Visitation show St. Joseph, but this painting shows that he accompanied Mary on her trip to see Elizabeth and Zechariah. It seems likely that St. Joseph would have accompanied Mary. Why would he have done this?Why did John the Baptist leap for joy when Mary spoke to Elizabeth? Notice how Elizabeth is pointing to Mary’s womb. How is this a preview of the mission of John the Baptist?Mary has a sort of “glow” about her, and she is looking up to heaven as if to acknowledge that God is the one who has “done great things for her.” Notice what her hands are doing. How do her hands express her Magnificat (see Luke 1:46–55)?John the Baptist and Jesus are still in the womb—they are so little. However, how have their lives already impacted the people shown within the painting and all the people of the world?
