Can a Hardened Heart Be Healed?

Can a Hardened Heart Be Healed?

Could your heart be growing hard without you even realizing it? Jeff explores the biblical meaning of a hardened heart, revealing how sin, pride, disappointment, and apathy can slowly diminish our ability to hear God's voice and respond to His grace.

What Is a Hardened Heart?

The Bible describes the heart as the center of our spiritual life—the place where we encounter God, make decisions, and respond to His voice.

A hardened heart weakens our ability to:

  • Perceive God's activity
  • Hear His voice
  • Understand His will
  • Remember His faithfulness

Pharaoh and the Meaning of a Hardened Heart

Exodus 4:21

"But I will harden his heart so that he will not let the people go."

Jeff explains that God did not force Pharaoh to become evil. The Hebrew word translated "harden" (kaved) means "to make heavy." In ancient Egyptian culture, a heavy heart symbolized guilt and condemnation when weighed against truth and justice. Pharaoh's heart became heavy because he repeatedly rejected God's commands and resisted truth.

Old Testament Warnings About Hardened Hearts

Deuteronomy 2:30

Sihon, king of Heshbon, resisted God's purposes through stubbornness and disobedience.

Jeremiah 16:12

"You are each one walking according to the stubbornness of his own evil heart."

Jeremiah 18:12

"We will continue with our own plans. Each of us will follow the stubbornness of his evil heart."

Pattern

  • Insisting on our own plans
  • Rejecting God's direction
  • Choosing stubbornness over surrender

These choices gradually harden the heart.

Signs of a Hardened Heart

Matthew 13:15

"For the heart of this people has become dull..."

Mark 8:17–19

Jesus asks His disciples:

  • Do you still not see?
  • Do you not understand?
  • Are your hearts hardened?
  • Do you have eyes but fail to see?
  • Ears but fail to hear?
  • Don't you remember?

Spiritual Symptoms

A hardened heart may cause us to lose our ability to:

  • Perceive accurately
  • Hear God clearly
  • Understand spiritual truth
  • Remember God's faithfulness

The Recipe for a Hardened Heart

Romans 1:18–24

Paul describes a progression:

  1. Suppressing the truth
  2. Refusing to glorify God
  3. Failing to give thanks
  4. Futile thinking
  5. Darkened hearts
  6. Pride and self-deception
  7. Idolatry
  8. Sinful desires gaining control

Four Causes of Spiritual Heart Disease

1. Sin

Unrepented sin hardens the heart.

  • Venial sin weakens our relationship with God.
  • Mortal sin cuts off the life of grace.

When sin remains unchecked, we can eventually stop recognizing it as sin.

2. Pride

Pride is an inaccurate assessment of who we are in relation to God and others.

Pride says:

  • "My way is best."
  • "I don't need God."
  • "I'm above others."

Humility restores truth and softens the heart.

3. Deep Disappointment

Pain, loss, and suffering can either draw us closer to God or push us away from Him.

When disappointment is left unresolved, it can become:

  • Bitterness
  • Cynicism
  • Distrust
  • Spiritual numbness

Matthew 11:28

"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

4. Apathy and the Cares of the World

Spiritual indifference slowly suffocates faith.

Just as physical inactivity damages the body, spiritual inactivity damages the soul.

The cares of the world can choke spiritual growth and weaken our relationship with God.

A Prayer for Self-Examination

Psalm 139:23–24

"Search me, O God, and know my heart..."

Ask the Lord to reveal any areas of stubbornness, pride, sin, disappointment, or apathy.

How to Reverse Spiritual Heart Disease

1. Go to Confession

Be honest before God.

Confess:

  • Actions
  • Attitudes
  • Habits
  • Areas of resistance

Confession restores grace and opens the heart to healing.

2. Eat Well Spiritually

Feed your soul with:

  • The Eucharist
  • Scripture
  • Prayer
  • The Sacraments

Psalm 119:9–11

"I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you."

3. Give Your Cares to the Lord

1 Peter 5:7

"Cast all your anxieties on him because he cares for you."

Matthew 11:28

"Come to me... and I will give you rest."

Unresolved stress affects both physical and spiritual health.

4. Get Spiritual Exercise

Practice obedience. Do the Word of God. Live the will of God. Spiritual growth comes through action, not information alone.
