Pope Leo’s April 2026 Prayer Intention
Each month, the Holy Father invites the faithful to pray for a particular intention, uniting Catholics around the world in a shared mission of intercession.
Vatican City, April 2026 — In his monthly intention for April 2026, Pope Leo XIV issues a heartfelt reminder to intercede for all priests, especially those experiencing challenges in their vocation and ministry. In his prayer this month, the pope asks the whole Church to join him in entrusting all priests in crisis to the grace of God and reminds Catholics to attentively support the needs of those who spiritually guide them.
The Strong Shoulders of a Shepherd
This month, Pope Leo asks Christ the Good Shepherd to accompany all priests who are undergoing moments of crisis. A Catholic priest holds many responsibilities in his hands: he is father to countless souls, a minister of salvation through the sacraments, and a companion to the suffering and marginalized. God’s people––from the most faithful to the marginalized––lean on their priests. The pope prays that all priests will know that they are being carried spiritually on the shoulders of the Good Shepherd in times when they are most in need of grace.
In addition to God’s divine grace, many earthly goods help priests to rekindle the vitality of their vocation––in particular, Pope Leo mentions the important role of virtuous friendships, solid community support, and even an excellent sense of humor to steer them through challenges. Being a priest himself (all popes answer to the title “father” long before “your holiness”), Pope Leo prays for his fellow ordained brethren with sincere care. He is confident that as their trust in God deepens, their joy in the Gospel and in their mission of service will also increase.
Beloved Sons First and Foremost
A priest experiences the same challenges as every other human person––loneliness, doubt, and exhaustion––yet often even more so than lay people do. The pope desires all priests to remember that they are “beloved sons … cherished disciples, and pastors sustained by the prayer of their people.” God’s unconditional love is greater than any of their struggles and wounds.
The second paragraph of the prayer highlights each priest’s most fundamental identity: they are beloved sons of the Heavenly Father. All baptized Christians are beloved children of God, yet priests hold a special dimension of this role. Through the graces and sacramental faculties of his ordination, a priest stands in persona Christi: God acts closely through a priest when he administers the sacraments. Every priest makes present to the Church the reality of Christ, the divine beloved Son of God the Father.
A Call to Compassion and Community
Pope Leo also prays that the Christian community would actively strive to return the love of Christ to all priests by showing them genuine care and kindness. Each member of the faithful shares the same baptismal mission of the priest: at baptism, we join the Body of Christ and receive a share of the Lord’s threefold office of priest, prophet, and king. Remembering that we are also tasked with reflecting Christ’s love and proclaiming the Gospel in our own lives can bring us closer to our priests.
April’s intention reminds all believers in the Church to give thanks to God for our priests and not to take them for granted. We are called to listen to them receptively and compassionately, and to accompany them with our prayers and presence. We should not expect them to be perfect, as this is not possible in the human condition. Instead, let us intercede, alongside Pope Leo for our priests to have the grace to persevere in their vocations.
Pope Leo’s Prayer For Priests in Crisis
Lord Jesus, Good Shepherd and companion on the journey, today we place in your hands all priests, especially those going through moments of crisis, when loneliness weighs heavily, when doubt clouds their hearts, and when exhaustion seems stronger than hope.
You who know their struggles and wounds, renew in them the certainty of your unconditional love. Let them feel they are not mere functionaries or lonely heroes, but beloved sons, humble and cherished disciples, and pastors sustained by the prayer of their people.
Good Father, teach us as a community to care for our priests: to listen without judging, to give thanks without demanding perfection, to share with them the baptismal mission of proclaiming the Kingdom in word and deed, and to accompany them with closeness and sincere prayer. May we support those who so often support us.
Holy Spirit, rekindle in our priests the joy of the Gospel. Grant them healthy friendships, networks of fraternal support, a sense of humor when things don’t go as expected, and the grace to always rediscover the beauty of their vocation. May they never lose trust in You, nor the joy of serving your Church with a humble and generous heart.
Amen.
